Clearances to plan for
- Main walkways: 30–36″ wide, so people can pass without turning sideways.
- Sofa to coffee table: 14–18″, close enough to reach a drink, far enough for legs.
- Behind a floating sofa: at least 30″ if it is a route through the room.
- Wall length: a sofa looks balanced at about two-thirds of the wall it sits against.
- TV distance: roughly 1.5–2.5× the screen size (a 65″ TV sits about 8–13 ft away).
Layouts that work
Float the U in the middle
Pull the sofa off the walls and leave a 36-inch walkway behind it. A floating U creates a clear living zone and lets the rest of the room work as a route, a reading corner or a dining area.
Anchor it with a rug
Use a rug big enough that at least the front legs of every module sit on it. For a 130 to 141-inch U-shape, a 10 × 14 ft rug usually does this; a 9 × 12 ft rug suits smaller L-shapes.
Keep conversation distance
People sitting across from each other should be no more than about 8 to 10 feet apart, or talking feels like shouting. In very large rooms, two facing sofas often work better than one giant U.

An open-plan room can take an L-shape facing the TV and a loveseat near the windows. Two smaller pieces are also easier to deliver and rearrange than one 12-seat set.
